What is a hand-tufted rug?

A hand-tufted rug is made by inserting yarn by hand into a backing fabric using a special tufting tool, which shapes the rug’s pattern. The production process is faster than hand-knotting, but still requires skilled craftsmanship. Hand-tufted rugs are often perceived as softer and more full, as the yarn sits higher from the base and the surface can be sheared to create a dense, smooth texture.
