What is a wool rug?

A wool rug is a rug where the pile or weave mainly consists of wool fibers from sheep. Wool is a protein-based natural material where each fiber is made up of keratin and has a natural scale structure. The fiber thickness varies depending on the type of wool but is generally between approximately 20 and 40 micrometers. This structure gives wool rugs their characteristic elasticity, thermal insulation properties, and durability.

At Classic Collection, wool is primarily used in hand-woven and hand-tufted rugs. The construction, consisting of a dense weave, even pile, or flat weave, determines how the rug performs in practice, for example, how it handles wear, dirt, and other furnishings.

Which rooms can wool rugs be used in?

Wool rugs can be used in all dry indoor environments. They are best suited for the living room, bedroom, dining room, or study. Keep in mind that wool rugs are soft and therefore have sound-absorbing properties.

  • The living room.Wool's natural stretch allows the fibers to spring back after being weighted down by furniture and foot traffic.
  • The bedroom.The low thermal conductivity of wool contributes to a warmer surface against the floor. It's pleasant and soft when walking barefoot in the bedroom.
  • The dining room.Densely woven wool rugs with short pile or flat weave are easier to vacuum around the dining table.
  • The study.Wool is good at absorbing sound and can contribute to a more subdued acoustics.

Wool rugs are generally not recommended for wet rooms or bathrooms as prolonged moisture can affect the fiber's structure.

What shapes are wool rugs available in?

In Classic Collection's assortment, wool rugs are available in several geometric shapes, adapted for different room types and furnishings. Here are all the shapes our wool rugs come in:

  1. Rectangular.Most common for the living room, under the dining table, and in the bedroom.
  2. Round.We have round wool rugs for a round table or to be placed in the center of a room.
  3. Long and narrow.Suitable for hallways, corridors, and narrow passages.
  4. Square.Often used under smaller seating areas or central furniture.

All wool rugs can be custom-made, allowing you to adapt the shape precisely to your room's proportions.

What colors are available for wool rugs?

Wool takes color well thanks to its chemical structure, where color pigments can bind deep within the fiber. Classic Collection's wool rugs are mainly available in:

  • Natural shades.Unbleached wool, grey, beige, and brown, often based on the wool's original color.
  • Muted colors.Colors such as blue, green, or rust, dyed to maintain low light reflection.
  • Patterned variations.Many of our wool rugs feature patterns. Both subtle patterns and colorful variations are available in the assortment. Here, contrast is created through weaving technique rather than strong color differences.

What sizes are wool rugs available in?

Wool rugs are available in a wide range of standard sizes, including the following:

  • Small rugs.Can be used next to the bed or in smaller areas.
  • Medium-sized rugs.Commonly in sizes like 170x230 cmor 200x300 cm.
  • Large rugs.Up to 300x400 cm for larger rooms and open-plan layouts.

What properties do wool rugs have?

Wool's technical properties clearly differ from synthetic fibers and many plant fibers. Here are the top 5 properties of wool rugs:

  • Natural dirt repellency.Wool contains lanolin, which makes the fiber less susceptible to dirt and liquids. It's almost as if stains and spills "disappear" on their own.
  • Shape retention.Wool fibers can be bent up to approximately 20,000 times before breaking, contributing to a long lifespan. It doesn't get the same "worn out" feeling as other rug materials.
  • Moisture regulation.Wool can absorb up to approximately 30% of its own weight in moisture without feeling wet.
  • Fire safety.Wool is naturally flame-resistant and does not melt when heated. Of course, it can still catch fire, but wool is less flammable than, for example, polyester.
  • Environmentally friendly.A natural material like wool is more environmentally friendly than synthetically created materials.

What different types of wool are there in rugs?

Not all wool rugs are made from the same type of wool. Differences in fiber thickness, length, and elasticity affect both feel and function.

  • Sheep wool (standard wool).Most common in rugs, with a fiber thickness of around 30-40 micrometers. It is durable and has good structure.
  • Merino wool.Finer fibers, often around 17-21 micrometers. Sometimes used in rugs where a softer surface is prioritized.
  • Highland wool.Comes from sheep in colder climates and often has coarser fibers with high resilience, which is suitable for densely woven rugs.
  • Recycled wool.Consists of mechanically recycled wool fibers. Fiber thickness varies, but the material reduces the need for new raw materials.

How do you care for wool rugs?

Proper care significantly extends the lifespan of a wool rug. The most important thing is to vacuum the rug regularly and to wipe up any stains and spills immediately before they dry. Here's a step-by-step guide on how to care for your wool rug:

  • Regular vacuuming.Use the flat nozzle without a rotating brush.
  • Remove spills immediately.Avoid rubbing in spills when liquid gets on the rug. Instead, place a damp cloth on the stain to allow it to soak up.
  • Rotation.Rotate the rug a couple of times a year to allow it to wear evenly on all corners.
  • Professional cleaning.We recommend professional rug cleaning when needed.

Wool rugs may initially shed fibers, which is normal and decreases over time. We advise against using a lint remover and instead suggest massaging the fibers in.
